Retort pouches, custom printed, sterilisable above 100 °C
A retort pouch is a flexible pack that is filled, sealed and then sterilised inside the pouch, in an autoclave, at above 100 °C. The heat treatment happens after sealing, so the pack itself has to survive the cycle: the laminate, the seal and the print all have to come out of the retort intact. That is what separates a retort pouch from every other pouch format, and why the structure is built differently.
Retort pouches replace cans and jars for ready meals, wet pet food, sauces and purees. The product is shelf stable without refrigeration, the pack heats through faster than a can because it is thin and flat, and it weighs and ships for a fraction of rigid packaging.

Why a retort structure is not an ordinary laminate
In a normal pouch, the seal layer only has to hold at room temperature. In a retort pouch it has to hold while the filled pack sits in pressurised steam above 100 °C. Polyethylene, the sealant in most flexible packaging, softens well before that. Retort pouches use cast polypropylene as the seal layer instead, because it keeps its strength through the cycle.
The other layers divide the rest of the work. The outer film, polyester or oriented polypropylene, carries the print and the dimensional stability, so the artwork does not distort in the autoclave. Oriented polyamide carries the puncture and flex resistance, and contributes the oxygen barrier. That matters because a hot filled pouch is handled while soft and often contains bone, pasta or vegetable pieces with hard edges.
These are transparent structures with no foil layer, so the product stays visible. Said plainly, that also sets their limit: the barrier comes from the polyamide, not from a dedicated barrier layer, so they sit below a foil laminate on oxygen and light protection. Where a product needs the longest possible ambient life, or has to be kept away from light, the honest answer is a different structure, and we will say so at quotation rather than after the trial.
Why the print sits inside the laminate
The print sits inside the laminate, not on the surface. The artwork is reverse printed onto the inside face of the outer film and then buried under the next layer, so it cannot scuff in transit and the retort water never touches it. A surface-printed retort pouch is a pouch whose artwork has to survive pressurised steam on its own.
The adhesives fail before the films do
The adhesives matter as much as the films. A standard lamination adhesive delaminates in the retort. Retort-grade adhesive systems are specified for the cycle, and this is the failure most often seen on packs sourced without a technical specification: the pouch survives filling, then separates in the autoclave.

Recyclability, stated plainly
Retort pouches are multi-material by construction. The properties that make the pack survive sterilisation come from combining polymer families, so a retort laminate does not enter a single recycling stream the way a monomaterial structure can. What can be said is narrower and true: there is no aluminium foil layer in these structures, and the polypropylene-based variant is the one closer to where design-for-recycling guidance is heading. VLM Poliplast does not claim otherwise, and does not issue a certified RecyClass grade. Where recyclability is the priority and the product does not require sterilisation, a monomaterial structure is the honest answer, and it is covered under design for recycling.

Frequently asked questions
What is a retort pouch used for?
Retort pouches hold food that is sterilised inside the sealed pack so it can be stored and sold without refrigeration. The common uses are wet pet food, ready meals, sauces, purees and portioned components for foodservice. In each case the pouch replaces a can or a jar, at a fraction of the weight and with a printable surface on both faces.
What are the disadvantages of retort pouches?
Three, stated honestly. The structure is multi-material, so it does not enter a single recycling stream. The pouch is not rigid, so it needs a carton or a tray for stacking and shelf presentation in some retail settings. And the process is unforgiving: films, adhesives and inks all have to be specified for the retort cycle, and a pack that was not built for it delaminates in the autoclave rather than on the filling line.
How long do retort pouches last?
Sterilisation makes the product shelf stable at ambient temperature, but the shelf life itself is set by the food producer, from the validated sterilisation process and from storage trials on the finished product. The packaging supplier does not set it. What the pouch has to do is hold its seal and its barrier for the whole declared period, and that is what the structure is specified against.
Are retort pouches microwave safe?
Aluminium foil is what rules a pack out of the microwave, and the structures VLM Poliplast manufactures carry no foil layer. That removes the obvious obstacle, but it is not by itself a microwave release. Microwave heating is less uniform than retort heating, and deformation, where it appears, shows up at the seal edge and above the fill line, most often with viscous, salty or oily fillings. Heating in a sealed pouch also builds pressure, so the seal, the venting or opening instruction and the heating conditions all have to be validated on the finished pack. That decision belongs to the food producer, against their product and their on-pack instructions, not to the packaging supplier.
Can retort pouches be custom printed?

Inks and adhesives are selected to hold through sterilisation, which is why retort artwork is specified differently from artwork for an ambient pouch.
