Technical requirements for supplement packaging
Technical requirements for supplement packaging vary with the product form (powder, capsule, tablet or gummy), the target shelf life and the distribution channel. Two parameters drive most structure decisions: OTR (oxygen transmission rate) measures how much oxygen passes through the film, expressed in cm³/m²/day, with lower values meaning a better oxygen barrier; WVTR (water vapour transmission rate) measures moisture transfer through the film, expressed in g/m²/day. Oxygen degrades oxidation-sensitive actives such as omega-3, probiotics and some vitamins, while moisture is the dominant risk for powders. Hygroscopic powders are powders that absorb moisture directly from the surrounding air, such as creatine, electrolyte blends and many amino acid formulations; for them, caking and clumping start at the first opening, which is why the moisture barrier and the reclosure system matter as much as the seal itself. A third requirement is light protection for photosensitive actives, which is why structures for these products are opaque or metallized, while capsules, tablets and gummies without strict light requirements can use pouches with a transparent window.

The best packaging for protein powder is the format that combines a sufficient moisture and oxygen barrier with reliable reclosure and reasonable logistics costs; for most retail protein products between 500 g and 2 kg, that is the stand-up pouch with ziplock on a high-barrier laminate. Rigid jars and tubs protect well and stack predictably, but they ship empty at full volume, weigh several times more than a pouch of the same capacity and use significantly more plastic per serving. A flexible pouch ships flat before filling, cuts packaging weight per unit and offers a larger printable surface for the same shelf footprint. Two practical notes from series production. First, for bulk fills between 2 and 5 kg the stability argument usually made for rigid tubs is answered on the flexible side by the quad seal bag, whose four-panel construction stands square under heavy fill and prints on all four faces. Second, powders do not need to be stored in glass: what protects a protein powder is the barrier of the laminate and the integrity of the seal, not the rigidity of the container, which is why a barrier pouch with a properly welded ziplock keeps the product in specification for its full shelf life at a fraction of the packaging weight.
